Hello, friends! I would like to take Venda, the Ravencrag Fury, on a journey through four quests with both the Hero and Quest Charters on Nightmare Mode. This session report details Venda's first quest, Into the Wilds.
Rules: This is the base game only, with revised basic rules, but no optional rules from Heart of the Mists.
In this story, bold indicates an action. (+X) means cards discarded for a bonus or added cost, instead of played for effect. Bold red means an action from an advanced feat purchased earlier in the same turn. I'll also use "equip" or "attune" to refer to gear and feats placed in the hero area, as well as other plain language to help keep the story easy to read. Have fun!
ROUND 1: THE TOTEM OF FURY
Hand: Blunt Bash x2, Furious Strike x2, Wrath Call.
Hero Area: Hand Axe x2.
As Venda traveled east from the Hearthfire Inn, she came across the Plain of Ice where she discovered a skeletal Totem of Fury protected by two Wild Ice Hounds and a Ghoren Ragecaller. As Venda entered their territory, both Ice Hounds and the Ragecaller surrounded her. The Ragecaller was particularly furious (enraged via encounter rules) and struck Venda by surprise with an arcane strike. Luckily, Venda only took one wound (buried Wrath Call from draw top), and with that shout, she leapt forward to attack.
Venda smacked one of the Wild Ice Hounds with a blunt bash from the butt of her axe, inflicting one wound and dazing it. While the beast was reeling, she charged at the other Ice Hound with a furious strike from an (embedded) fast attack, killing it in a single blow. She turned around and used another fast attack (+1) against the Ghoren Ragecaller, also killing it. This enraged the remaining Wild Icehound who tried to attack Venda, but because the poor wounded beast was dazed, and it had no help from its pack, its attack dealt no damage. Venda had swung with both axes, but she was not done yet. She shouted a wrath call, readied and equipped her hand axe. The sight of the relentless Ravencrag enraged the Wild Ice Hound again, but it was still dazed and missed its attack. Finally, Venda used another fast attack (+1) inflicting the final wounds needed to kill the Ice Hound. Venda breathed a sigh of relief, as she managed to dispatch all her foes without getting wounded. Her Ravencrag Resilience allowed her to recover a wound (Wrath Call) before she moved on. (Hand after draw: Hand Axe x2, Taunt, Furious Denial, Furious Strike).
The Plain of Ice was now safe. She searched the ice and discovered a Healing Potion and Stone of Power. She kept the Healing Potion but decided it was not worth the effort to try and get the stone (+1 resolve). Venda rested, although she did not get much rest in the frigid ice. (Restored Blunt Bash and 2x Furious Strikes from discard.) Finally, as time passed, there was Hope and Shadow: time passed (+2 time) but she did feel inspired (drew Wrath Call).
ROUND 2: THE BLOODTHIRSTY PACK
Hand: Hand Axe x2, Healing Potion, Taunt, Furious Denial, Furious Strike, Wrath Call.
Hero Area: None.
Discard: Blunt Bash, Wrath Call.
It was an arduous journey to move out of the Plain of Ice and Venda's new healing potion froze (discarded). Eventually, Venda came across a Circle of Sorcery, and she immediately felt drained (2 magic damage) in the cursed land. She was resilient and took only one wound (buried Wrath Call from discard). At this location, Venda discovered a Bloodthirsty Pack of a Dire Wolf and two Wild Ice Hounds. All three beasts charged at her and the Dire Wolf was enraged (special encounter rule). Venda knew, however, that even an enraged Dire Wolf would not attack immediately (it is not a Raging Enemy). She focused her attention instead on the Ice Hounds, who were much more prone to immediate rages.
To prevent the Ice Hounds from raging, Venda saved her big surprise for later. First, Venda equipped her Hand Axes and used a furious strike from an (embedded) fast attack against one of the Ice Hounds, killing it. Then, Venda's axes suddenly burst into flame as she attuned the fire of fury! She leaped at the other Ice Hound with a fast attack empowered with the fire of fury and killed it in a single fiery blow. This twice triggered the rage of the Dire Wolf, but still it did not attack yet. Shouting a wrath call, Venda readied her off-hand axe again and equipped it. The Dire Wolf was enraged yet again, but still did not attack. Finally, Venda used another fast attack empowered with the fire of fury and killed the Dire Wolf. Phew. Venda used her Ravencrag Resilience to heal the wound she took from the cursed land (on Wrath Call) and readied herself once more. (Hand after draw: Hand Axe x2, Taunt, Furious Denial x2).
The Circle of Sorcery was now safe. She searched the land and discovered a Potion of Inspiration and a Stone of Power. Once again, she kept the potion but did not try and extract the stone. (+1 resolve.) Venda rested (restored Furious Strike and Blunt Bash from discard). Finally, the Mists were Relentless: time passed (+2 time) and Venda felt drained of stamina (discarded Taunt). Additionally, even her new Potion of Inspiration dulled its color and became useless, at least for now (discarded).
ROUND 3: GHARDHAK THE CHARRED
Hand: Hand Axe x2, Furious Denial x2.
Hero Area: Fire of Fury.
Discard: Healing Potion, Potion of Inspiration, Wrath Call, Taunt.
Venda pushed forward to her final location. Past the Circle of Sorcery she discovered the Hunting Grounds, and there Ghardhak the Charred was waiting for her with four wildlander bodyguards: a Ghoren Smallhorn, two Ghoren Warriors, and a Ghoren Bloodtracker. Venda surveyed the terrain as she prepared for this final battle, and she delightfully realized Ghardhak would be unable to summon reinforcements here (encounter reinforcement box blank) no matter how much noise she made. The Ghoren Smallhorn and two Ghoren Warriors engaged her, while the Bloodtracker and Ghardhak stayed farther out of the action.
Venda equipped her hand axes and used a fast attack empowered with the fire of fury against the Ghoren Warrior, taking advantage of his low magic defense and killing it instantly. The fiery kill triggered the rage of the Ghoren Smallhorn. He struck Venda, wounding her, but only lightly (buried Wrath Call from discard). Venda struck the other Ghoren Warrior with a regular attack empowered with the fire of fury, again instantly killing it. Immediately after the kill, Venda was about to unleash an advanced feat, but not before the enraged Ghoren Smallhorn interrupted her and attacked her again (bury Taunt and Potion of Inspiration from discard), cracking her potion vial in the process. In a crescent of blood, Venda retrieved her axe and made an (embedded) fast attack empowered with the fire of fury against the Ghoren Smallhorn, killing it in a single fiery blow. Venda shook off the pain from her wounds with her Ravencrag Resilience (moved Wrath Call to draw bottom). She readied herself again. (Hand after draw: Hand Axe x2, Furious Denial x2, Taunt).
The mists were relentless (+2 time) and weakened Venda (discarded Taunt and Furious Denial).
ROUND 4: THE BATTLE CONTINUES
Hand: Hand Axe x2, Furious Denial.
Hero Area: Fire of Fury.
Discard: Healing Potion, Crescent of Blood, Taunt, Furious Denial.
Burial: Potion of Inspiration, Wrath Call, Taunt.
The Ghoren Bloodtracker and Ghardhak charged towards Venda. She had to end this quickly. The Bloodtracker could no longer hide behind his allies (all Enemies are Ranged) but, as Ghardhak's bodyguard, he had to be taken out first. Venda equipped her hand axes and began her assault.
She flicked her main hand axe and the flames erupted. She lunged at the Bloodtracker with a regular attack empowered with the fire of fury, killing it instantly. With no more bodyguards, Ghardhak became enraged; however, Venda knew he would not act out immediately (not a Raging Enemy). In a crescent of blood, Venda retrieved that axe, flicked both axes ablaze, and used both her main and off-hand axes in a mighty (embedded) regular attack (+1) double slash empowered with the fire of fury against Ghardhak, inflicting 6 wounds. In fact, Venda's attack was so fiery that it set both she and Ghardhak ablaze (3 burn). Although Ghardhak struck back at Venda and the burns wounded her, she easily survived while Ghardhak succumbed to his burns and died.
Venda saves the day!
I hope you enjoyed reading. Venda shall go on another quest soon...
I always play Venda , she is an awesome character. Especially when paired with Fengray.
Think Jon Snow and Ygritte fighting the White Walkers and their denizens ....
Venda is one of my Favorited characters. However I think some of her advance feats are quite powerful.
Last time, I played her together with Sigraed, from Heart of the Mist. It was quite fun to burn all enemies down
